Summary
[Inside front cover]
BEETHOVEN [probably at his apartment in the Ballgasse; probably late morning, Saturday, November 20, 1819]:
Pick up the watch today.
Pen-knife.
Tooth powder.
[Blatt 1r]
BERNARD [probably in a restaurant at midday dinner; ca. 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 20]: I just put an article about the last examination of the pupils at the Singing Institute in the Zeitung.[//]
When will you write to Weissenbach? // You should press them to notify you of the difficulties that are used as an excuse, so one can refute them. // But there is always gossip. [//] [Blatt 1v] I doubt that he should be in agreement, but it is certain that he could have done more. [//]
Tomorrow [Sunday, November 21] at midday, there is a theatrical entertainment at the Karntnertor at 12:30; for this reason, I cannot have the honor of eating at the Strong One's [at Starke's]. Don't you want to go to the Karntnertor, too? [//] [Blatt 2r]
He wasn't certain what to find in these matters; therefore the uncertainty in his behavior. [//]
The two actors Topfer and Kettel have a free-will admission fee. [//] The management doesn't want to lose anything because of this act of kindness. [//] When are you going to see Mad[ame] Weissenthurn? [//] [Blatt 2v]
I told the lawyer that such gossip was absolutely inappropriate to the authorities. [//] Have you written to him that you have not received the decision with the number? [//] He has probably been here for 15 or 16 years now. [//] He has a pair of gray pantaloons from Manchester, which he wears everywhere. [//] [Blatt 3r] A specific decree must finally follow, after which the matter can be continued without change. [//] He is a short man, with thin hair, some 50 years old. [//] If it doesn't work in the present manner, nothing is more purposeful than to appeal as soon as possible [Blatt 3v] Cuckold maker [next to it, a pencil sketch of a woman's head in profile]. [//] She [Johanna van Beethoven] is a child of Vienna. [//] It appears to me, though, that <the Magistrat> the Provincial Judge had prearranged the matter in this way after [lawyer Joseph von] Schmerling's departure.
