Summary
While the fondness chimpanzees hold in their hearts for sugar and their equally strong aversion to antifeedants is well understood today, as late as 1975, when Jane Goodall had already spent 15 years at Gombe, primatologists were baffled by the many differences between monkeys and apes. Given that both live in forests and eat fruits, why should they differ so much in social system, population density, body size, and cognition? The answer, it turns out, can be traced to differences in digestive physiology and how those differences dictate their diet and foraging behavior.
