The use of archive film or photographs can certainly bring topics and subjects to life, especially History, Citizenship, English and Art. For a royalty-free photographic archive try UK Photo and Social History Archive (www.ukphotoarchive.org.uk). For more current film information, children and young people may be interested in BAFTA Kids (www.baftakids.org), the Bafta Organisation's platform for 7–14- year- olds to discover films and television. This has teaching and learning materials for teaching with, or about, film. It has film resources for Sci-Fi in the classroom; Gothic in the classroom and Black Star education. For each, there are films to watch and resources to use to explore the film, linking to curriculum subjects. These are excellent resources with great originality to use at home or in the classroom.

Moving Image Archive

This is a fantastic resource to explore with around 100 years of Scotland's history from both amateur and professional film makers. There are 1000s of films from the National Library of Scotland archives. It has a simple search facility that makes this brilliant resource even more attractive. Excellent.

Select Education for access to films and television titles from 1890 to 2014. Access the Lesson Bank for links to curriculum subjects covering English, History, Geography, Citizenship, Science, Music, Art and Design, MFL and RE, not to mention Film and Media Studies and the Performing Arts. This has some amazing films and documentaries with detailed lesson plans. Fantastic to use in the classroom or for learning at home. Excellent.
