Chapter 4 is an expanded version of a chapter that will be published in the edited collection ‘Money Matters in Migration’, by Cambridge University Press in 2021. Chapter 7 is a revised and expanded version of my article ‘Deaths, Borders, and the Exception: Humanitarianism at the Spanish–Moroccan Border’, published in the American Behavioral Scientist in 2020.
