Summary

Introduction

The drive towards furthering knowledge in a clinical environment has been a motivator for those wishing to improve the healthcare of patients. Increasingly, new research requires peer review, ethical considerations and funding to support new initiatives, theories or hypotheses. This chapter provides information on funding for clinicians who wish to obtain support for their research.

At present there is a range of funding streams available to support clinical research; the recent introduction of the National Institute for Health Research has led to an additional sphere of relevant options, as part of the Department of Health funding initiative of £1025 million for 2010. These changes directed researchers towards obtaining competitive nationally peer-reviewed grant funding to support their research, through the NIHR or their recognized funding partners. Further funding is available through small charity organizations, industry and other agencies.
