Summary

The introduction presents aims and methods of the study, laying out the criteria and distinctions adopted in the analytical chapters in order to systematically document the earliest examples of cemented-rubble construction in Roman towns and allied communities. The discussion takes into account the relevant aspects of the organization and administration of public building that may have influenced technological innovation, focusing especially on the management of building contracts.
