Summary
With these enthusiastic words, the Hebrew-language journal Ha-Ivri summed up Agudat Yisrael’s founding conference in May 1912. Moreover, the article declared, the newly minted party would soon unite klal Yisrael – all the Jewish people. This, at least, was the sincere hope of the piece’s author, Meir Berlin – a Mizrahi leader of all things. Whereas the Zionist Organization, he contended, was nothing more than a single-issue party among a host of other movements, Agudat Yisrael had the wherewithal to represent every last Jew; for unlike the ZO, it merited the backing of the Jewish people’s spiritual luminaries. In his subsequent report on the conference’s proceedings, Berlin lauded its main organizer, Jacob Rosenheim, “whom many call the [Theodor] Herzl of Agudat Yisrael,” and “his staff.” In Berlin’s estimation, Rosenheim was indeed the catalyst behind the new movement.1
