Summary

BRITISH MUSEUM

Plaster model for the Trinity bust. This magnificent head is a striking example of the value of the plaster model spoken of in the Introduction. Although described both in the Roubiliac Sale Catalogue and the minute of its reception in the British Museum as terracotta, it is in fact a plaster cast from a lost terracotta, and as such has all the value of the original. Roubiliac's power over plastic material is nowhere more wonderfully illustrated than in the vigorous modelling of the hair and mouth of this most living of posthumous portraits.
