This book has been written as part of the project “IDEALE Interplay between National Defence, Security and Low-Carbon Energy Policies: A Sustainability Transitions Perspective.” It has been funded by the Research Council of Finland (decision numbers 322667, 328717, and 352972) and the Finnish Environment Institute Syke.

I am grateful to many colleagues for their contributions to different parts of the project, making this book possible. First, I want to thank Johan Schot, in the capacity of my former foreperson in the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), for influencing the formation of the project idea and supporting the development of the project proposal. My thinking on the potential negative side of sustainability transitions and the impact of defence policy on energy transitions was inspired by Johan. Second, I want to thank Marja Helena Sivonen, for being a lovely project partner and friend with whom to explore the topic of this book. She has gathered the empirical material with me, commented on the contents of the book, and been the coauthor in several peer-reviewed scientific articles that the project has produced. This process was instrumental in me getting more acquainted with security studies and becoming aware of the concept of positive security, on which I draw a great deal in this book.
