Sheep fed on either a low (500 g lucerne (Medicago sativa) chaff/d; L) or high (1100 g lucerne chaff/d; H) intake had measurements made, using arterio–venous techniques, of blood flow and energy metabolite and cysteine utilization in the skin. Sheep on the H intake had significantly increased skin blood flow (P = 0.014) and oxygen uptake (P = 0.05). Although the H sheep had higher skin blood flow they showed no difference in skin uptake of either glucose or acetate compared with the L sheep, but the H sheep had a significantly lower output of lactate (P = 0.014). Animals in each group had either [14Clglucose or [14Clacetate infused into the skin which showed that acetate was the predominant precursor of skin sterol and fatty acid synthesis in the H sheep while L sheep skin used both glucose and acetate. The H sheep showed an increase in the net uptake of cysteine by the skin (P = 0.053), and in the uptake of cysteine for protein synthesis (P = 0.078), relative to the L sheep and this increase was of a comparable magnitude to the increase in blood now to the skin. Although blood flow, protein synthesis and energy supply increased in the skin of the H sheep by 200–300%, wool production would only have increased by 10–20 %, suggesting that nutrient flux changes are not the sole level of regulation of wool production.

Forty-two crossbred lambs (33·4 kg initial body weight; twenty-four wethers and eighteen ewes) were used in a 42 d experiment with a 2 × 3 factorial treatment arrangement to determine effects of forage level and source on splanchnic tissue mass. Diets were 250 and 750 g/kg of chopped lucerne (Medicago sativa) (A), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)–wheat (Triticum aestivum) (RW) or bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) (B) hay, with the remainder being maize-based concentrate. Five lambs per treatment were slaughtered at the end of the experiment and measurements made of internal organs and contents of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) on the 7 d preceding slaughter was 0·89, 0·83, 0·90, 0·83, 0·77 and 0·61 (SE 0·05) kg/d, and live-weight gain was 0·20, 0·17, 0·18, 0·10, 0·10 and 0·07 (SE 0·02) kg/d for diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively. Total GIT mass (fresh) was higher (P < 0·05) for 750 than 250 g forage/kg and for B than RW (4·80, 4·57, 5·55, 5·84, 5·99 and 6·91 kg for diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively). Nonfat organic matter was 259, 295, 292, 303, 277 and 264 g for the total GIT; 93, 102, 103, 106, 95 and 97 g for the reticulo-rumen (forage level × type (diet A v. diets RW and B) interaction; P < 0·05); and 204, 196, 202, 177, 156 and 127 g for the liver (SE 10) with diets A-25, RW-25, B-25, A-75, RW-75 and B-75 respectively. In summary, differences in properties of forage A and the grasses at 250 g/kg diet may have influenced GIT mass independent of energy intake and digesta mass. Conversely, with 750 g dietary forage/kg, higher digesta mass for diet B than diet RW appeared responsible for high reticulo-rumen mass relative to DOMI. Greater digesta mass for 750 than 250 g forage/kg may have elevated intestinal tissue mass/DOMI with diets A and B but not with diet RW, for which NDF digestibility was highest.

An energy system is described in which, in both single-stomachedand ruminant animals, the heat increment of feeding is considered to be linearly related to five measurable quantities. For both kinds of animals there of the quantities, with their heat increments in parentheses, are urinary N(wu;kJ/g),faec alorganic matter (wd; kJ/g) and positive protein retention (wp; kJ/g). Inruminants the other two, with their heat increments in parentheses, are CH4energy (wm; kJ/kJ) and positive lipid retention (w1;kJ/g); in single-stomached animals they are positive lipid retention from feed lipid (wu; kJ/g), and positive lipid retention not from feed lipid (w1; kJ/g). Data from suitable experiments on steers, pig sandchickens were used to test the system and to estimatewu29·2, wd3·80, wp36.5, wm0·616, w116·4 and w114·4. The values for wu, wd, wm and (wI–wII) allow an energy scale, called effective energy, to be defined for both single-stomached animals and ruminants. On this energy scale the values of wp and w1, to gether with the heats of combustion of protein and lipid of 23·8 and 39·6 kJ/g respectively, allow the energyr equirement to be expressed as (MH+ 50 PR+56 LR) for both kinds of animal, where PR and LR are the rates of positive protein an lipid retention (g/d), and MH is the maintenance heat production (kJ/d) which can be estimated as 0·96 of the fast in gheat production. The effective energy (EE) yielded toaruminant animal by a feeding redient can be estimated as EE (MJ/kg organic matter)=1·15 ME–3·84–4·67 DCP, where ME is the metabolizable energy value (MJ/kg organic matter)and DCP is the digested crude protein content (kg/kg organic matter) with both measured at maintenance. Alternatively, EE can be estimated as EE (MJ/kg)=GE (d–0·228)–4·67 DCP, where GE is the gross energy (MJ/kg)and d is the energy digestibility (MJ/MJ) also measured at maintenance. The EE yielded to a single-stomached animal can be estimated as EE(kJ/g)=1·17 ME–4·2 CP–2·44, where ME(kJ/g)is measured at, orcorrected to, zero N-retention and CP (g/g)is the crude protein (N×6·25) content of the feeding redient. The system is simpler for ruminants, and more accurate for both kind soft animal, than those no win use. As effective energy values can be tabulated foring redients, and are additivet othe extent that ME values are additive, they can be used to formul at ediet susing line ar programming.

Body composition was measured in nine healthy, normal-weight, weight-stable subjects in three different research centres. In each centre the usual procedures for the measurements were followed. It revealed that the measurement procedures in the three centres were comparable. Body composition was measured in each centre between 09.00 and 13.00 hours after a light breakfast by densitometry (underwater weighing) and bio-electrical impedance. A single, total-body-water determination by D2O dilution was used as a reference value. Body fat determined by densitometry was significantly lower in one centre, which, however, could be completely explained by a lower body weight, probably due to water loss (the subjects refrained for a longer time from food and drinks before the measurements in that centre) and, thus, by violation of the assumptions of Siri's (1961) formula. Also, body impedance was slightly higher in that centre, indicating a lower amount of body water. Mean body fat from densitometry was also slightly lower in that centre compared with body fat determined by D2O dilution. Individual differences between body fat from densitometry and from total body water were relatively large, up to 7% body fat. The relationship between fat-free mass from densitometry and bio-electrical impedance was not different between the centres. It is concluded that differences in the relationship between body composition and bio-electrical impedance, as reported in the literature, may be due to differences in standardization procedures and/or differences in reference population.

‘The Stockholm Pregnancy and Weight Development Study’ was conducted to identify risk factors for postpartum weight retention, such as dietary habits, physical activity and socio-demographic factors. The body weight development of 1423 pregnant women was studied prospectively from the beginning of the pregnancy until 1 year postpartum. Data were collected from routine pregnancy records and from questionnaires 6 and 12 months postpartum. Mean weight retention 1 year postpartum was 0.5 kg compared with the prepregnancy body weight. A ‘trend method’ was constructed to identify a number of pre-defined major patterns of behaviour. The weight retention 1 year postpartum was greater in women who (a) increased their energy intake during and after pregnancy, (b) increased their snack eating after pregnancy tc three or more snacks/d, and (c) decreased their lunch frequency starring during or after the pregnancy. Women who had retained > 5 kg 1 year postpartum were more seldom physically active in their leisure time throughout the study period compared with women with a smaller weight gain. Postpartum weight retention correlated negatively with the degree of physical activity in the second half year postpartum. These results indicate that postpartum weight retention is more affected by a change in lifestyle during, and above all after, pregnancy than by factors before pregnancy.

The effects of changing rumen osmotic pressure (OP) upon water kinetics and volatile fatty acid (VFA) absorption in the rumen of sheep were studied in two 4 × 4 Latin square experiments, each using four lambs with a rumen cannula and an abomasal catheter. In both experiments the lambs were sustained by the intragastric infusion of all nutrients (VFA, Ca, P, Mg and a buffer solution into the rumen, and casein, vitamins and trace elements into the abomasum). On experimental days, which were at least 1 week apart, drinking water and the casein infusion were withdrawn, and the ruminal OP was changed and held constant for 9·5 h, by incorporating NaCl at different concentrations in the buffer solution being infused. In Expt 1 the target OP values were 300, 340, 380 and 420 mosmol/kg, and in Expt 2 were 261 (no saline addition), 350, 420 and 490 mosmol/kg. Using soluble non-absorbable markers (PEG in continuous infusion and Cr-EDTA injected in pulse doses) rumen volume, liquid outflow rates, apparent water absorption through the rumen wall and VFA absorption rates were estimated at six sampling times corresponding to the 1·5 h intervals during the last 7·5 h following the change in rumen OP. Liquid outflow rate (F; ml/h) showed a significant and positive linear relationship with the rumen OP (mosmol/kg), resulting in the equation F = 1·24 OP (SE 0·096)–36·5 (SE 36·6) (r2 0·96). Similarly, water absorption rate (W; ml/h) was significantly affected by rumen OP, and this relationship was given by W = 395 (SE 39·9) −1·16 OP (SE 0·105) (r2 0·95), which means that for an OP of 341 mosmol/kg the net movement of water across the rumen wall would be zero, and either a net efflux or a net influx of water would be observed with lower or higher OP respectively. In Expt 2 there was a significant linear effect of OP on rumen volume (P <0·01), with higher OP being associated with increases in rumen liquid contents of about 10–20%. As rumen OP was increased there was also a decline in the absorption rate of VFA (from 232 mmol VFA/h for OP 350 to 191 mmol/h for OP 490 mosmol/kg), resulting in the accumulation of VFA (especially acetate) in the rumen and a consequent fall in rumen pH. Rumen OP seems to be important in defining water movement across the rumen wall and, hence, partitioning between absorption and outflow.

The apparent digestibility of energy, protein, fat and non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) of low and high dietary fibre (DF) mixed diets were studied in three series of experiments with man and the rat. Low DF diets were used as control diets in each experimental series and the DF level was increased by adding fruits and vegetables (Study 1), citrus fibre concentrate (Study 2) and insoluble barley fibre (Study 3), In Study 3 the high DF diet was fed at two protein levels. There was in most cases good agreement between the digestibility of energy between man and the rat, with the digestibility of energy of the low DF control diets of 0.941–0.950 in man compared with 0.933–0.952 in the rat and of the high DF diets of 0.897–0.931 in man and 0.865–0.920 in the rat. The biggest difference in digestible energy between the two species was found for the diet enriched with fruits and vegetables (0.032 absolute units) and citrus fibre concentrate (0.025 absolute units). Apparent digestibility of protein was slightly lower in man than in the rat for all diets in Studies 1 and 2. In Study 3, however, apparent digestibility of protein was consistently lower in man than in the rat with differences in absolute digestibilities between the two species varying from 0.023 (high DF/high protein) to 0.071 (high DF/low protein). The digestibility of fat was the same in man and in the rat in all but the high DF diet of Study 2. The rat appears to have a lower capacity to digest fibre polysaccharides than man and the digestibility of NSP was consistently lower in the rat than in man. The biggest difference between the two species was found for the diets in Study 2 where the digestibility of NSP in man was measured to be 0.774–0.885 compared with only 0.501–0.517 in the rat. For the other diets the differences in NSP digestibility were 0.077–0.137 absolute units. In spite of some differences between man and the rat in their ability to digest nutrients the various diets are ranked in the same order by the two species.

The present experiment was designed to study the influence of dietary energy source (fat or carbohydrate) and tryptophan (TRP) on protein synthesis and plasma insulin concentrations in the piglet. Six dietary regimens, based on either a high-fat (F) or a high-carbohydrate (C) diet with three levels of TRP (deficient, 1; adequate, 2; excess, 3), were used. Fractional protein synthesis rate (ks; % per d) was measured in the liver, Longissimus dorsi (LD), Semitendinosus (ST), skin, femur, brain, pancreas, stomach, mucosa of the duodenum and jejunum, and the whole body, using a‘flooding dose’of 3H-phenylalanine. Mean integrated insulin, gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) and glucose concentrations were higher after the C diets compared with the F diets, TRP supplementation globally augmented ks linearly in the liver, ST, skin and whole body, while it had quadratic effects in the LD (ks highest in the TRP-adequate diet groups) and jejunal mucosa (ks lowest in the TRP-adequate diet groups). Pancreatic ks was increased by TRP addition up to a plateau. ks was highest after the F diets in the digestive tissues while in the skin and LD ks was highest after the C diets. Fasting concentrations of gluconeogenic amino acids were lower (and urea higher) with the F than the C diets, suggesting their use as precursors for glucose synthesis. In conclusion, we have confirmed the depressive effects of TRP deficiency on ks, RNA activity and growth. We could not establish a relationship between plasma insulin and muscle ks. This may be related to the way in which we manipulated plasma insulin concentrations.

To study the relationship between health and nutritional status in elderly populations, information about body composition is essential. To collect this information in large epidemiological studies, practical methods based on anthropometric data must be available. In the present study the relationship between body composition, determined by densitometry, and anthropometric data in 204 elderly men and women, aged 60–87 years, was analysed. Existing prediction equations described in the literature, and mainly based on young and middle-aged subjects, generally underestimated percentage body fat in the elderly study population. Therefore, new prediction equations were developed, based on sex and the sum of two (biceps and triceps) or four (biceps, triceps, suprailiaca and subscapula) skinfolds or the body mass index (BMI). Addition of age or body circumferences to the models did not improve the prediction of body density. Internal cross validation and external validation revealed that the formulas are valid for the estimation of body density in elderly subjects. The standard errors of estimate of the three models, expressed as percentage body fat, were 5.6, 5.4 and 4.8% respectively.

Knowledge about changes in body composition during gestation is of interest when estimating energy requirements during pregnancy, and relevant since reproduction is often surprisingly well maintained in malnourished females. Due to difficulties in conducting such studies in humans, studies in rats are of interest. Therefore, maternal retention of fat and fat-free weight was estimated in rats during the first 2 weeks of gestation and during a corresponding time period in virgin controls. Groups fed ad lib. or 70 % of ad lib. intake during the 4 weeks preceding conception and during gestation were studied. Retention was estimated by comparing pregnant and virgin rats with rats killed at the time of conception. Body fat was analysed chemically and fat-free weight was body weight minus body fat. Each rat was divided into twelve to fourteen parts and the fat content of each part was analysed. Pregnant ad lib.-fed rats retained more fat and fat-free weight than did virgin ad lib.-fed controls. In the energy-restricted group the pregnant rats retained more fat-free weight while virgin rats retained slightly more fat than did pregnant rats. The difference between pregnant and virgin rats with respect to the amount of fat in the different body parts was small in both feeding groups. Thus, the statement that fat stored at specific sites in the maternal body represents an important source of energy for use during lactation was not supported. The findings suggest that pregnancy stimulates growth of the maternal body and that chronic moderate energy restriction curtails this growth.

Protein synthesis rates were measured in liver and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) sections of fattening sheep offered lucerne (Medicago sativa) pellets at either 1.25 or 2 times energy maintenance. The measurement technique involved a large dose of [l-13C]valine over 60 min. Animals on the higher intake had a larger mass of liver protein (143 ν. 100 g, P = 0.02), similar fractional synthesis rates (ks; 22.5 ν. 22.1%/d, not significant) and greater absolute amounts of protein synthesis (32 ν. 23 g/d; P = 0.016) compared with those on the smaller amount of ration. The ks values and RNA: protein in the GIT sections also tended to increase with food intake. Estimated total GIT protein synthesis was approximately three-fold that in liver and probably constituted 25–35% of whole body synthesis. All splanchnic tissues measured had lower translational efficiencies (g protein synthesized/d per g total RNA) than reported for milk-fed and newly-weaned lambs and this may relate to the decline in the rate of protein deposition as lambs progress to the fattening condition.

Six adult castrated male red deer (Cervus elaphus), fitted with rumen cannulas, were offered chaffed lucerne hay ad lib. during winter and summer, with voluntary food intake (VFI) being respectively 59 and 89 g dry matter intake (DMI)/kg bodyweight 0.75 per d. The same animals were also offered the same feed during summer, with intake restricted to that of winter VFI. The apparent digestibility of gross energy (0.60) or fibre (0.41) and the total capacity (volume) of the rumen were unaffected by season or level of intake. Relative to winter ad lib. feeding, N retention, total rumen pool size (DM +water), rumen pool size as a proportion of capacity, and rumen total volatile fatty acid (VFA) pool size were increased during summer ad lib. feeding. Relative to winter ad lib. feeding, N retention, rumen ammonia irreversible loss rate (IRL), total rumen pool size, rumen pool size as a proportion of capacity, and rumen ammonia and total VFA pool sizes were also increased during summer restricted feeding. Rumen Lignin fractional disappearance rate (FDPR) was lower in summer than in winter, and there was a nonsignificant trend for rumen fractional outflow rate (FOR) of liquid to follow the same trend. Molar proportions of acetate and propionate were unaffected by season, proportions of n-butyrate were slightly higher in summer, and proportions of iso-butyrate and iso-valerate were higher for summer restricted than for winter ad lib. feeding. When intakes were equalized there were no seasonal changes in rate of rumen water outflow, net rumen water balance or intestinal water absorption. It is concluded that there is a seasonal change in rumen physiology in red deer during summer causing increased total rumen pool size (DM + water), an increase in rumen ammonia production and pool size, and an increase in rumen total VFA pool size which are all independent of the increase in VFI. The increased total rumen pool size in the summer restricted group may indicate an increased mean retention time (MRT) of digesta in the rumen. MRT for particulate matter was calculated to be 29.2 and 34.8 h during winter and summer respectively. This, together with increased rumen ammonia production, may function to maintain rumen fibre digestion when VFI normally increases during summer. The increased rumen VFA pool size may indicate increased VFA production during summer, in the same way as ammonia IRL was increased.

To investigate changes in the thermic effect of a meal (TEM) during pregnancy, metabolic rate was measured in the fasting state and during the first 180 min after consumption of a standardized test meal in twenty-seven women before, and in each trimester of pregnancy. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) showed a steady increase over pregnancy: values in weeks 24 and 35 of pregnancy were significantly higher than the prepregnancy baseline (Tukey's studentized range test). The pattern of changes of postprandial metabolic rate (PPMR) was similar to that of RMR. Consequently TEM, calculated as PPMR minus RMR, did not change over pregnancy; mean TEM values (kJ/180 min) before and in weeks 13, 24 and 35 of pregnancy were 117 3 (sd 19.4), 116.4 (sd 23.7), 111.6 (sd 24.4) and 111.5 (sd 26.7) respectively. We consider changes in TEM of less than 15% to be of little importance physiologically. If true changes in TEM over pregnancy are 15 % or more we would have had a 90 % chance of observing significant changes in TEM in the present study, given the number of subjects and the methods used. Therefore, we conclude that no substantial reduction in TEM occurs during pregnancy.
