The crystal structure of two chain functionalized pyrroles, methyl 1-benzyl-5-(1-(4-chlorobenzoyloxy)-2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)-4-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate and methyl 1-benzyl-4-(biphenyl-4-yl)-5-(1-(4-biphenylcarbonyloxy)-2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate, which are both important active candidates as antitumoral agents, have been obtained ab initio from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. Both compounds crystallize in the monoclinic system (space group P21/c), with a = 20.2544(3) Å, b = 6.80442(9) Å, c = 21.1981(3) Å, β = 111.6388(9)° and a = 29.7747(6) Å, b = 6.27495(14) Å, c = 18.8525(3) Å, β = 107.053(2)°, respectively. These structures were determined using a direct space approach, by means of Monte Carlo technique, followed by Rietveld refinement.

A polycrystalline single-phase sample with nominal composition Bi24PbO37 was synthesized from Bi2O3 and PbO by a high-temperature solid state reaction at 690 °C for 1.5 h. The compound adopts Bi12SiO20-type structure [cubic, space group I23 (No. 197); a = 10.24957(3) Å] and was refined to Rp = 7.96%, Rwp = 10.4%, Rexp = 8.43%, RB = 3.06%, and S = 1.23. The distributions of Pb2+ and Bi3+ over cationic sites based on the X-ray powder diffraction data were determined using a combination of the Rietveld refinement and bond valence calculations. The results showed that the asymmetric unit contains two mixed cation sites: the fully occupied 24f site and the partly occupied 8c site, with the unit-cell content (Bi23.68Pb0.32)(Bi1.28Pb0.72)O38.48. The structural constraints favor a preference of Pb2+ ion for the 8c site, i.e. only 1.3% of Bi3+ is substituted by Pb2+ at the 24f site and 36% at the 8c site. At the 24f site, the cations are surrounded by 5 + 2 or in a very small amount by 5 + 1 + 2 oxide ions, forming a base bicapped square pyramid or a bicapped highly deformed octahedron, respectively. At the 8c site, the cations with three oxide ions form a trigonal pyramid with the cations at the apex.

The structure of the metal–organic framework (MOF) compound [{Ca(H2O)6}{CaGd(oxydiacetate)3}2]·4H2O was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and refined using conventional single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. In addition, the structure was refined using powder diffraction data collected from two sources, a conventional X-ray diffractometer in Bragg–Brentano geometry and a 12-detector high resolution synchrotron-based diffractometer in transmission geometry. Data from the latter were processed in three different ways to account for crystalline decay or radiation damage. One dataset was obtained by averaging the multiple detector patterns, another dataset was obtained by cutting the non-overlapping portions of each detector to consider only the first few minutes of data collection and a dose-corrected dataset was obtained by fitting the independent peaks in every dataset and extrapolating the intensity and peak position to the initial time of data collection or to zero-absorbed dose. The compared structural models obtained show that special processing of powder diffraction data produced a much accurate model, close to the single-crystal-based model for this particular compound with heavy atoms in high symmetry positions that do not contribute to a significant number of diffraction intensities.

The crystal structure of tin (II) sulphate, SnSO4, was obtained by Rietveld refinement using synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (HRPXRD) data. The structure was refined in space group Pbnm. The unit-cell parameters for SnSO4 are a = 7.12322(1), b = 8.81041(1), c = 5.32809(1) Å, and V = 334.383(1) Å3. The average 〈Sn–O〉 [12] distance is 2.9391(4) Å. However, the Sn2+cation has a pyramidal [3]-coordination to O atoms and the average 〈Sn–O〉 [3] = 2.271(1) Å. If Sn is considered as [12]-coordinated, SnSO4 has a structure similar to barite, BaSO4, and its structural parameters are intermediate between those of BaSO4 and PbSO4. The tetrahedral SO4 group has an average 〈S–O〉 [4] = 1.472(1) Å in SnSO4. Comparing SnSO4 with the isostructural SrSO4, PbSO4, and BaSO4, several well-defined trends are observed. The radii, rM, of the M2+(=Sr, Pb, Sn, and Ba) cations and average 〈S–O〉 distances vary linearly with V because of the effective size of the M2+cation. Based on the trend for the isostructural sulphates, the average 〈Sn–O〉 [12] distance is slightly longer than expected because of the lone pair of electrons on the Sn2+cation.

A new hydrate of magnesium chromate is synthesized by quenching aqueous solutions of MgCrO4 in liquid nitrogen. MgCrO4·11H2O is isostructural with the rare mineral meridianiite (MgSO4·11H2O) being triclinic, , Z = 2, with unit-cell parameters a = 6.811 33(8) Å, b = 6.958 39(9) Å, c = 17.3850(2) Å, α = 87.920(1)°, β = 89.480(1)°, γ = 62.772(1)°, and V = 732.17(1) Å3 at −15 °C. The difference in unit-cell parameters between SO4- and CrO4-bearing species is only partially accounted for by the difference in S–O and Cr–O bond lengths; the remainder of the difference (over 90% in the cell volume) is attributed to weakening of the interpolyhedral hydrogen-bond network.

Based only on a geometrical approach, we present a technique to index powder diffraction diagrams. This would allow us to find the cell parameters from the experimental data. It is well known that methods proposed in the literature make a direct use of the experimental data to build the cell, whereas our approach exploits them to calculate theoretical values, which could be multiples of two of the three vectors' lengths of the unit cell, and then uses them along with the experimental values. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, several examples, requiring only minor limitations in linear dimensions (<35 Å) and volume (<4500 Å3), are treated. For all considered cases, except the triclinic symmetry that is time consuming, the corresponding FORTRAN routine is executed in a reasonable time (<3 min with a 3 GHz processor).

Micro-X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis provides us with elemental maps that are very useful for understanding the samples under test. Usually, scanning-type elemental mapping is performed. That means a sample stage is scanned to a fixed X-ray microbeam. XRF analysis is performed at the scanned points, leading to 2D elemental mapping. One of the drawbacks of this technique is the long acquisition time depending on the area being mapped and the lateral resolution required. Thus, projection-type elemental mapping has been studied. We have studied the projection type XRF imaging by using a straight polycapillary optic combined with an X-ray CCD camera. To obtain the elemental map, we applied a wavelength dispersive spectrometer (WDS). In this paper, we report a newly developed 2D dispersive device. The construction and analytical performance of this X-ray optic will be explained.

Crystalline silica is known for its health hazards, and since 1997 has been listed as Group 1, Carcinogenic to Humans, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. This issue is particularly important in the industrial environment, and there is still no method that allows quantification of the different polymorphs of crystalline silica. Many analytical methods have been proposed, and the major problem in almost all cases is attributable to the very large variety of matrixes encountered. This study evaluates the potential of X-ray diffraction techniques and an automated Rietveld analysis in order to overcome this problem and to adapt the quantitative analysis of quartz, the most prevalent crystalline silica polymorph, to routine analysis in the health and safety environment. Matrix simulations are done and many parameters are optimized. Sample preparation, the acquisition program, pattern treatment, and Rietveld refinement are evaluated, and a general procedure is determined. Automation of Rietveld refinement leads to a significant reduction in analysis time, but cannot be applied to every type of sample.

The Nd1.7Ba0.3Ni0.9Cr0.1O4+δ polycrystalline sample was synthesized by the sol–gel process and a subsequent annealing at 1523 K in 1 atm of flowing argon. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and electrical transport properties have been investigated as well. The oxygen non-stoichiometry was determined by iodometric titration. The sample shows adoption of the K2NiF4-type structure based on a tolerance factor calculation. Rietveld refinement of the crystal structure from X-ray powder diffraction data confirmed that Nd1.7Ba0.3Ni0.9Cr0.1O4+δ adopts the tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm, Z = 2). The room temperature unit-cell parameters are determined to be a = 3.82515(2) and c = 12.47528(6) Å. The reliability factors are: RB = 0.043, Rwp = 0.012 and χ2 = 3.00. The Nd1.7Ba0.3Ni0.9Cr0.1O4+δ compound exhibits a semi-conductive behaviour. The electrical transport mechanism has been investigated and it agrees with the adiabatic small polaron hopping model in the temperature range 313 K ≤ T ≤ 708 K.

A new compound Er0.33Sr1.67Ni0.8Cu0.2O4−δ (ErSr5Ni2.4Cu0.6O11) was prepared using the conventional solid state method and annealed at 1423 K in 1 atm of oxygen gas flow. The oxygen non-stoichiometry (δ = 0.47) was determined by iodometric titration. Rietveld refinement using powder X-ray diffraction data confirms that the sample adopts the K2NiF4-type structure (space group I4/mmm (Z = 2), a = 3.760 56(4) and c = 12.3889(1) Ǻ). The final reliability factors were: Rwp = 10.75%, χ2 = 2.51, Rp = 14.80%, RB = 4.77% and RF = 2.73%. Four probe electrical resistivity measurements were performed vs. temperature in the range of 320–540 K. A semiconducting behaviour over the whole range of temperature, with a maximum conductivity of 0.026 S cm−1 is observed at 439 K.

Total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF) was used to analyze residual surface contamination on Genesis solar wind samples and to evaluate different cleaning methods. To gauge the suitability of a cleaning method, two samples were analyzed following cleaning by lab-based TXRF. The analysis comprised an overview and a crude manual mapping of the samples by orienting them with respect to the incident X-ray beam in such a way that different regions were covered. The results show that cleaning with concentrated hydrochloric acid and a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid decreased persistent inorganic contaminants substantially on one sample. The application of CO2 snow for surface cleaning tested on the other sample appears to be effective in removing one persistent Genesis contaminant, namely germanium. Unfortunately, the TXRF analysis results of the second sample were impacted by relatively high background contamination. This was mostly due to the relatively small sample size and that the solar wind collector was already mounted with silver glue for resonance ion mass spectrometry (RIMS) on an aluminium stub. Further studies are planned to eliminate this problem. In an effort to identify the location of very persistent contaminants, selected samples were also subjected to environmental scanning electron microscopy. The results showed excellent agreement with TXRF analysis.

M2(dhtp)·nH2O (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Zn; dhtp = 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate), known as MOF74, is a family of excellent sorbent materials for CO2 that contains coordinatively unsaturated metal sites and a honeycomb-like structure featuring a broad one-dimensional channel. This paper describes the structural feature and provides reference X-ray powder diffraction patterns of these four isostructural compounds. The structures were determined using synchrotron diffraction data obtained at beam line 11-BM at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) in the Argonne National Laboratory. The samples were confirmed to be hexagonal R 3 (No. 148). From M = Mn, Co, Ni, to Zn, the lattice parameter a of MOF74 ranges from 26.131 73(4) Å to 26.5738(2) Å, c from 6.651 97(5) to 6.808 83(8) Å, and V ranges from 3948.08 Å3 to 4163.99 Å3, respectively. The four reference X-ray powder diffraction patterns have been submitted for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File (PDF).

An experimental X-ray powder diffraction pattern was produced and analyzed for imipenem monohydrate, an antimicrobial pharmaceutical agent. Although there are no experimental powder patterns in the ICDD PDF-4/Organics Database, there is one powder pattern calculated with single-crystal X-ray diffraction data from the Cambridge Structural Database. Here, we report the refined experimental powder diffraction data for imipenem monohydrate. These data for imipenem monohydrate are consistent with an orthorhombic crystal system having reduced unit-cell parameters of a = 8.2534(3) Å, b = 11.1293(4) Å, and c = 15.4609(6) Å. The resulting unit-cell volume, 1420.15(15) Å3, indicates four formula units per unit cell. Observed peaks are consistent with the P212121 space group.

To enable mechanical milling of small (0.1–1.0 g) samples, a cylindrical grinding vessel machined from polypropylene and furnished with tungsten carbide rods has been designed and produced for use inside the conventional jar of a McCrone Micronizing Mill. The vessel is about one-seventh the volume of the conventional jar supplied by the manufacturer. The conditions of milling for both the conventional and the miniaturized-grinding assemblies were tested using quartz sand as a limiting case. The median grain sizes of the resultant powders were measured by an X-ray gravitational-sedimentation method, with contamination from the grinding media measured by Rietveld refinement and by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The use of tungsten carbide grinding elements permits rapid wet milling of a small sample to the same median grain size in about one-third of the time required by a regular sample ground in corundum. The relative contamination (by tungsten carbide on a weight basis) using the miniaturized-grinding assembly is about 6(1)% of the proportion of corundum contamination yielded by the conventional grinding assembly.

National Security Technologies (NSTec) has developed calibration procedures for X-ray imaging systems. The X-ray sources that are used for calibration are both diode type and diode/fluorescer combinations. Calibrating the X-ray detectors is a key to accurate calibration of the X-ray sources. Both energy dispersive detectors and photodiodes measuring total flux were used. We have developed calibration techniques for the detectors using radioactive sources that are traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The German synchrotron at Physikalische Technische Bundestalt (PTB) was used to calibrate the silicon photodiodes over the energy range from 50 to 60 keV. The measurements on X-ray cameras made using the NSTec X-ray sources included quantum efficiency averaged over all pixels, camera counts per photon per pixel, and response variation across the sensor. The instrumentation required to accomplish the calibrations is described. The X-ray energies ranged from 720 to 22.7 keV. The X-ray sources produce narrow energy bands, allowing us to determine the properties as a function of X-ray energy. The calibrations were done for several types of imaging devices. There were back and front illuminated CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors, and a CID (charge injection device) type camera. The CCD and CID camera types differ significantly in some of their properties that affect the accuracy of the X-ray intensity measurements. All the cameras discussed here are silicon based. The measurements of the quantum efficiency variation with the X-ray energy are compared to the models for the sensor structure. The cameras that are not back-thinned are compared to those that are.
