Summary
In daardie ou dae het wilde diere ’n ernstige bedreiging vir die mens ingehou. Saans, terwyl die mense nog gekuier het, of teen slapenstyd, het ’n hiëna, as hy nie bokke kon vang nie, dikwels in ’n dorp ingeglip, iemand gevang en met hom laat vat, terwyl niemand hom agterna gesit het om te maak dat hy die slagoffer laat los nie. En daardie arme mens het aanhoudend die donker nag in geskreeu en gesê: “Hy tel my op! Hy sit my neer! Hy vat my weer! Hy sit my neer! Nou vreet hy my!” Deur so te roep het die slagoffer bly hoop dat hy mense daarmee kon waarsku waar hy hom bevind sodat hulle hom te hulp kon snel. Maar uiteindelik het die hiëna hom dan opgevreet sonder dat iemand hom te hulp gesnel het. Omdat daar in daardie dae nie stewige deure was nie, is kinders soos Chaka dikwels by so ’n ingang laat slaap, in die huis van die jonges, sodat hiëna se kind dié een kon vang en die ander kon oorleef. Hy wat Chaka was, is daar by die ingang van die jongklomp se hut laat slaap sodat die gevare van die nag en van towery by hom kon begin. Van hom is ’n versperring gemaak waarmee ander beskerm is. Maar ten spyte daarvan het daardie gevare by hom verbygegaan; ’n hiëna sou slegs aan hom ruik en dan verbygaan dieper die hut in en iemand anders opraap. Sulke kere het die hiëna gewoonlik nie iemand by die ingang gevat nie, so asof hy geweet het dat dié wat by die ingang slaap, die uitgestotenes was.
Twee of drie keer is Chaka se hande daar by die slaaphut geboei en is hy buite voor die hut so vasgemaak laat slaap, sodat die hiëna hom kon sien terwyl dit nog in aantog was. Wanneer ’n hiëna naby die dorp opgemerk is, is daar verwag dat hy mense sou vang as dit donker word; maar sulke nagte het die hiëna bokke gevang en mense met rus gelaat. Chaka het voorwaar swaar grootgeword.
