Summary
And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.
And God spake unto Israel in a prophecy of the night, and said, ‘Jacob, Jacob’. And he said, ‘Here am I’.
And he said, ‘I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt on account of the servitude which I decreed with Abraham, for I will there make of thee a great nation:
I am he who, in my word, will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will see the affliction of your children, and my word will bring you in there, and I will also cause your descendants to come out from there, but Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes’.
(These verses follow the Hebrew, except that verse 10 added, ‘Shaul, who is Zimri, who acted like the Canaanites in Shittim’.)
And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez and Zerah: but Er and Onan died because of their evil works in the land of Canaan. And Shelah and Zerah did not beget sons in the land of Canaan, and the sons of Perez who went down into Egypt were Hezron and Hamul.
