Summary

In this part we get acquainted with the very basics of control engineering (Chapter 2) and the dynamics of mechanical oscillations, in air and in water, in response to some oscillatory external force (Chapters 3 and 4). In Chapter 2, our interest is in first developing an intuitive understanding of control engineering, and then using this to begin to explore control theory, as it pertains to our goal in this book. Since all “active” wave energy devices rely on wave-induced oscillations for power capture from waves, we study oscillating systems next, in Chapters 3 and 4. Our particular focus is on answering the question: how do we capture most energy from the external oscillatory force by controlling the oscillations of our mechanical system? We realize in the process that control of mechanical oscillations on or just below the water surface is much more complicated than when such oscillations take place in air.
