Summary

This list is limited to the roles of St. Michael in scriptural, apocryphal, and pseudepigraphal texts. It is meant to serve as a convenient index of the variety of the archangel's roles in that body of literature. I have deliberately left out the medieval English materials since the organization of Part II is based on a full discussion of those roles. Cross-referencing titles of texts in this list with those in the “Inventory,” which has a fuller bibliographic apparatus, should facilitate sourcing materials mentioned in this list.

I. Roles in Creation and Procreation

  1. Gospel (Questions) of Bartholomew (53): Michael helps God in creation, bringing him a clod of dirt from the four corners of the earth, and water out of the four rivers of paradise.

  3. I Enoch (Ethiopic) 69: Michael is in charge of secret oath of creation, Akae.

  1. II Enoch (Slavonic).

  2. Syblline Oracles
