Archbishop George Abbot of Canterbury to the episcopate:

Salutem in domino. The kings moste excellent majestie beinge dailie more and more inflamed with zeale and love to the howse of God haithe latelie entred into a moste Christian consideration what in his princelie goverment maye yett further be added to the advancement of true religion and establishment of pietie within his dominions. And havinge resolved of some course howe the better it maye be effected his highnes haith beene pleased to deliver certaine instructions unto me and to some other of our breethren the bishoppes here abydinge that parte of them may be alsoe communicated unto your lordshipp which by these presentes I send hereinclosed. Nowe by cause theie come from a soveraigne soe gratiouslye affected to the Churche I make no question but that your lordshipp wilbe very carefull and forward to see them putt in execution. And so mutche the rather by cause theie doe putt us in mynde of that which is our deutie. And for the accomplishinge wherof wee should not onelie be remembrancers but suiters alsoe to his most excellent majestie to doe that which his highnes alreadie [desires?]. For it would [be] a singuler reproche unto us if wee should be could or careless in discharginge that which lyeth upon us when our kinge and soveraigne in the middest of soe manie greate and waightye affaires which belonge unto his regall government is soe forward and zealous to advaunce Gods honour and to promote trewe religion. Instructions to the bishopps of the province of Canterburye.

1. That certificate be made what haithe bee done in all the particulers specified in a letter written to the bishopps by the late lord archbishopp of Canterbury wherof his majestie requirethe from them a strickt accompte.

2. That theie use all theire best meanes for presentinge and discoveringe popishe recusants, as alsoe for puttinge them to the oathe of allegiance. And if theie refuse to come unto them to use therin the assistance of the justices of assize aswell as of those that be for the peace.
