Summary
Articles ecclesiasticaly to be enquired of by the church-wardens and sworne-men within the dioces of Gloucester. In the visitation of the right reverendy father in God, Myles, Lord Bishop of the said dioces, this present yeere. 1622.
1. First, you shall enquire, and truly present upon your oathes taken, whether any person whatsoever doth maintaine or defend any heresies, false opinions, or popish errors, contrary to the word of God, and contrary to the articles of religion established in this realme.
2. Secondly, whether any person be an impugner or depraver either in word or writing, of the forme of ecclesiastical government of this Church of England, or hath spoken in derogation of the booke of common prayer, or the rites and ceremonies prescribed to be used, either in the service of God, or administration of the sacraments, or against any of the articles agreed upon, ann. 1562 or against the kings supremacy in causes ecclesiasticall, or against the oath of supremacy or alleagiance, as pretending the same to be not lawfull nor warrantable by the word of God.
3. Whether any person hath thrust himself into any ecclesiastical function, without an ordinary calling; as to reade publike service in church or chappell, not being lawfully ordered deacon at the least.
4. Whether your parson, vicar or curate, presume to preach, not being licenced by the lord bishop, and whether any be admitted to preach in their cures not licenced accordingly.
5. Whether your parson or vicar be knowne, suspected or probably reported, to have obtained his benefice by any simonicai compact, made either by himselfe or others, directly or indirectly: or doe let out his living to farme or any part therof, to any person in consideration of any such compact: and whether the patron hath bestowed the benefice to the incumbent freely, or by symony.
6. Whether have you had a sermon preached every sabbath day this last yeere, if not, yet how many have you had: and upon those Sundaies that you had not a sermon, have you had an homily read.
