Summary
Like southern Jim Crow, apartheid or racial separation was official in the Union of South Africa. Enacted by the National Party in 1948 to maintain the power of the white minority, it endured until 1994.
Apartheid not only separated the white, black (Bantu), colored (mixed-race), and Indian races but also excluded native blacks (whose ten tribes constituted the majority population) from education, suffrage, skilled jobs, and decent housing. Blacks lived on less than 8 percent of the land in separate tribal homelands, where crowding and rebelliousness caused police crackdowns and forced removals. After killing many protesters at Sharpeville in 1960, authorities banned the African National Congress (ANC). Established in 1912 for black liberation and suppressed by the government, it carried out armed struggles that helped support increasing homeland protests, the international antiapartheid movement, and abolition of the system. Authorities killed thousands of blacks and relocated more than 3 million during apartheid's forty-six-year reign.
