Summary

This new section recognizes the greater attention being paid to the manuscript as artifact, performance, or objet d'art itself. Xb is broader than Xa, since extra-manuscript illustration may still relate to reception of Chrétien's romance through intermediaries in other languages. On gestures in illustrations, see François Garnier, Le Langage de l'image au Moyen Age: I. Signification et symbolique. II. Grammaire des gestes, 2 vols (Paris: Léopard d'Or, 1982–89), as well as Ba and Ld.
