Summary
And Lot lifted up his eyes to degeneracy, and beheld all the Plain of Jordan, that it was a place of waters every where, before the Lord destroyed in his wrath Sodom and Gomorrah. It was a land excellent in trees like the garden of the Lord, and in provision, like the land of Egypt, as thou goest unto Zoar.
So Lot chose him all the Plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.
Now the men of Sodom were evil in their wealth one with another, and they offended in their bodies in uncovering nakedness, and the shedding of innocent blood, and they practised alien worship, and rebelled against the name of the Lord.
Other Targums on Genesis xiii. 10–13
T.O.: Now the men of Sodom were evil in their wealth, and rebelled exceedingly against the Lord.
Notes on Genesis xiii. 10–13
The separation between Abraham and Lot, mentioned in Gen. xiii. 11, is emphasised in Ps. Jon., and Lot's sojourn in Sodom is anticipated. The root zanah (‘degeneracy’) is usually used of sexual offence: ‘R. Jose b. R. Hanina said: “The whole of this verse indicates shameful desire: And Lot lifted up his eyes, as you read, … his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph.”
