After these things, when the kings had assembled and fallen before Abram, and he had killed four kings, and nine encampments had been brought back, Abram thought to himself and said: ‘Woe is me, for perhaps I have already received the reward of my obedience in this world, and I have no portion in the world to come; or perhaps the kinsmen and friends of those who were killed will unite in legions and come against me; or perhaps at that time there was found for me the reward of a little merit, so that they fell before me, but on the second occasion no reward will be found for me, and in me the name of the heavens will be profaned.’ At that the word of the Lord was with Abram in a vision, saying, ‘Fear not, Abram, for even if these men should unite in legions and come against you, my word will be thy shield; and even if they fall before you in this world the reward of your good works will be preserved and made ready before me for the world to come exceeding great’.

And Abram said, ‘O Lord God, abundance have you bestowed on me, and abundance is in your possession to give me. But what gain is it to me if I go from the world childless, and Eliezer the administrator of my house, at whose hands signs were wrought for me in Darmasek, expects to be my heir?’
