Claiming that Mark is a Paulinist does not require that he agree with Paul about everything, and plausible reasons can be advanced for a later Paulinist wanting to write the story of the earthly Jesus. Martin Werner's assertion that the agreements between Mark and Paul reflect general early Christian viewpoints is not valid with regard to the theology of the cross, which was a controversial Pauline emphasis and a stress that the later Gospels attenuated in editing Mark. Contrary to Werner, Mark and Paul agree in ascribing Jesus' death to a combination of human and demonic opponents.

The tradition that identifies Matthew's magi as ‘wise men’ is considered in light of narrative criticism, social history, and Wirkungsgeschichte. An examination of literature relevant to the narrative's setting reveals that Matthew's readers are expected to regard magian learning not as wisdom but as foolishness. Matthew's narrative is prejudiced against scholarship, such that the magi's status as fools is what qualifies them as candidates for divine revelation. The tradition that regards the magi as wise men can be traced to the Renaissance and attributed to an ideological bias that favours a blessing of scholarship.

The paper discusses one of the key concepts of Paul's anthropology, the concept of the ‘inner human being’ (όέσω άνθρωποσ). According to recent contributions by U. Duchrow, T. K. Heckel, C. Markschies and W. Burkert, Paul's concept originated in Plato. The questions still open are: How did the concept get into the hands of Paul? How does Paul interpret the concept in accordance with his own theological anthropology? Answering these two questions is the goal of the paper.

This article studies the text of the recently published P115, a text containing substantial portions of Revelation and dating from the late third or early fourth century. It is argued here that the manuscript is the oldest member of the A C text-type by over a century, and that agreements between P115 A C against P47 and/or ℵ confirm the high quality of this new papyrus. None of the singular readings here has a claim to be correct, but there are perhaps six readings where the evidence of the papyrus makes a case for a change to the text of Nestle–Aland/UBS.

Little attention is given to the stare and the loud voice of Paul in the healing of the cripple in Acts 14.8–10. This article examines these two actions and suggests that far from being incidental in the narrative they help to explain how the Lystrans recognized that ‘the gods have come down’ in Paul and Barnabas. In both Graeco-Roman texts and in Jewish literature, the stare and the loud voice are indicators of the action or presence of the gods. In addition, the command ‘arise’ is commonly given by divine beings in Jewish texts.

The polemic against ‘the Jews’ in the Fourth Gospel is often realized and criticized. But John also points out that Jesus himself is a Jew. This is the way John draws the line of his incarnation theology into the ‘history’ of Jesus, narrated in the gospel. As ‘prophet’ (4.19) Jesus the ‘Jew’ (4.9) is ‘the Saviour of the world’ (4.42); as man, coming from Nazareth in Galilee (1.46; 4.43f; 7.41), Jesus is the Messiah, born in Bethlehem (7.42): well known as ‘son of Joseph’ (1.45; 6.42), unknown as ‘Son of God’ (cf. John 1.19). On the cross Jesus the ‘King of the Jews’ (19.19) dies ‘for the people’ and ‘for the scattered children of God’ (11.50ff). It is an essential aspect of John's Christology that Jesus belongs to his Jewish people. This theological fact, founded in the identity of the one God, shows the so-called anti-Judaism of John in a new light.

Die Verbindung der Tollwut mit Dämonologie findet sich zwar im hellenistischen Bereich selten, ist aber im frühjüdisch-christlichen Bereich recht häufig. Sie ist, obwohl die Belege weitgehend späteren Datums sind, auch für die Entstehungszeit des Textes annehmbar, weil es sich hierbei um Alltagswissen handelt, das sich anders als andere soziale Institutionen nur ganz langsam verändert.

In the ‘quest for the historical Jesus’ it has become axiomatic that the Fourth Gospel, with a few notable exceptions (e.g. certain elements in the passion narrative), has little to offer attempts to trace the person and activity of the pre-Easter Jesus. A study of the Johannine presentation of the beginnings of Jesus' ministry, his relationship with the Baptist, the calling of disciples and his presence in the Jerusalem Temple, suggests otherwise. Given the Markan imposition of a ‘framework’ upon the Synoptic tradition, the Johannine tradition may more accurately recall those early events.

Der Leser beginnt somit den Text ‘auf mehreren Ebenen’ gleichzeitig zu lesen, wird hineingezogen in die Sprachwelt des Johannesevangeliums, in der Aussagen häufig mehr als eine Bedeutung haben können. Häufig versteht er mehr als die Akteure des Textes. Dieses Verhältnis dreht sich nun bei der Gestalt des Natanael um: die rätselhafte Aussage Jesu, er habe Natanael ‘unter dem Feigenbaum’ gesehen, bevor Philippus ihn gerufen habe, läßt sich nun nicht eindeutig als Anspielung auflösen. Der durch die bisherigen Entdeckungen sensibilisierte Leser tappt in die Falle des unlösbaren Rätsels: der innertextliche Charakter Natanael weiß gemeinsam mit Jesus etwas, was der Leser nicht zur letzten Zufriedenheit aufklären kann. Damit bleibt die innertextliche Gestalt Natanael dem Leser zumindest in einem Punkt überlegen – zusätzlich vielleicht eine Erklärung für die reiche Wirkungsgeschichte des Natanaelfigur.

Van Unnik interpreted the biographical term άνατροϕή in Acts 22.3 as confirmation of the view that Paul spent the major part of his youth in Jerusalem. A linguistic, rhetorical and narratological enquiry shows that this interpretation cannot be sustained. Acts and the undisputed Pauline letters make it more probable that Paul went to Jerusalem in his adolescent years. The Tarsus–Jerusalem dichotomy should be superseded by the recognition that Paul was the meeting and integrating point of a variety of influences.

Zugleich mit dieser Beobachtung wird ausschnitthaft der Prozeß der Entwicklung genuin paulinischer Gemeindesprache zur Bezeichnung typischer Sozialstrukturen innerhalb der Gemeinden erkennbar.

The infrequent use of the Jesus-tradition in Acts is seldom noted, but it has implications for the use of the Jesus-tradition in early Christianity. It is widely assumed that the Jesus-tradition served to justify and to legitimate changing Christian belief and practice. However, the church in Acts does not normally seek justification for its practices or beliefs from the teaching or example of Jesus. The assumptions of gospel criticism about the function of the Jesus-tradition need to be tested against the observable phenomena of the one writer whose interest spanned the life of Jesus and the life of the church.

The polarity between ‘hierarchical’ and ‘egalitarian’ perspectives on the relationship of male and female is not the best way to approach this passage (1 Cor 11.2–16), which interprets this relationship as one of interdependence. This interdependence is expressed in the shared practices of prophecy and prayer, in which the dialogue between God and the congregation is articulated. In Paul's proposed modification to these practices, female head-covering – probably a veil – serves as a symbol of women's freedom from an erotic basis for the relationship of male and female derived from creation.

How far should one take account of the wider context of OT citations used by NT writers in interpreting a NT text? This question is addressed in this article in relation to the first readers of NT texts, and focuses in particular on two texts from 1 Corinthians. General considerations make it rather unlikely that any very broad context would have been ‘heard’ by most readers/hearers in the first century. Detailed study of 1 Cor 5.13 (with its possible allusion to exclusion formulae from Deuteronomy) suggests that no reader is likely to have picked up such an allusion. There is a stronger case for a slightly wider context having been in mind in the case of 1 Cor 1.31; but this may have been because the Corinthians themselves had the text in mind already, and this may in part explain Paul's words in 1 Cor 4.6.

Paul's phrase ‘the law of Christ’, used without explanation in Gal 6.2, means neither some form of words (such as Lev 19.18), nor a norm constituted by the example of Christ himself. It is rather a metaphor for what, in the life of those who belong to Christ, occupies the place that law had in the life of those who came before Christ: it means the Spirit, as described in Gal 5.16–25. Incidentally, the phrase serves to relativize ‘law’, implying that the Jewish law is just one form of law and not the highest.

The article proposes a dialogue between Virgil's Georgics and John's Apocalypse as a means of illuminating Revelation's view of the natural world. A comparison of the two works reveals a common understanding of the natural order as at once beautiful and terrifying, majestic and vulnerable. While irreconcilable religious differences remain (particularly concerning the figure of Augustus), the two works can still be read in a complementary way. Virgil's lyrical evocations of the Italian countryside give a new depth to the tragedy of the destruction of the natural order in Revelation, while John's theology of hope supplies a theological focus lacking in the Latin poet.
