Summary
I originally titled this book “Yankee Go Home? Activists, Alliances, and Overseas U.S. Military Bases.” I presumed the title would grab readers' attention. As the book moved closer to completion, however, I began to think harder about the ramifications of publishing a book with the said title. Based on the title alone, some might dismiss the book as another left-wing manifesto denouncing U.S. militarism and avoid reading it. Meanwhile, those most eager to read the book – namely, those in the activist community – might walk away sorely disappointed by my findings and tell others to leave the book on the shelf. Picturing the book (or myself as the author) getting flak from both ends of the political spectrum, I prepared to open the preface with the old saying “Never judge a book by its cover.”
I imagine my paranoia has something to do with teaching and residing inside the Washington beltway. Thus, after a brief discussion with my editor, Lew Bateman, I decided to choose the more neutral title that now graces the cover: Activists, Alliances, and Anti–U.S. Base Protests. This title more accurately reflects the subject matter as well as my intentions in writing a book about security alliances and anti-base movements.
