A semigroup B in which every element is an idempotent can be embedded into such a semigroup B′, where all the local submonoids are isomorphic, and in such a way that B and B′ satisfy the same equational identities. In view of the properties preserved under this embedding, a corresponding embedding theorem is obtained for regular semigroups whose idempotents form a subsemigroup.

Using the Stückrad–Vogel self-intersection cycle of an irreducible and reduced curve in pro-jective space, we obtain a formula that relates the degree of the secant variety, the degree and the genus of the curve and the self-intersection numbers, the multiplicities and the number of branches of the curve at its singular points. From this formula we deduce an expression for the difference between the genera of the curve. This result shows that the self-intersection multiplicity of a curve in projective N-space at a singular point is a natural generalization of the intersection multiplicity of a plane curve with its generic polar curve. In this approach, the degree of the secant variety (up to a factor 2), the self-intersection numbers and the multiplicities of the singular points are leading coefficients of a bivariate Hilbert polynomial, which can be computed by computer algebra systems.

We study a family of semi-ample divisors on the moduli space of n-pointed genus 0 curves given by higher-level conformal blocks. We derive formulae for their intersections with a basis of 1-cycles, show that they form a basis for the Sn-invariant Picard group, and generate a full-dimensional subcone of the Sn-invariant nef cone. We find their position in the nef cone and study their associated morphisms.

We give a complete characterization of a hypercyclic abelian semigroup of matrices on ℂn. For finitely generated semigroups, this characterization is explicit and it is used to determine the minimal number of matrices in normal form over ℂ that form a hypercyclic abelian semigroup on ℂn. In particular, we show that no abelian semigroup generated by n matrices on ℂn can be hypercyclic.

In 2001, Enochs's celebrated flat cover conjecture was finally proven, and the proofs (two different proofs were presented in the same paper) have since generated a great deal of interest among researchers. The results have been recast in a number of other categories and, in particular, for additive categories. In 2008, Mahmoudi and Renshaw considered a similar problem for acts over monoids but used a slightly different definition of cover. They proved that, in general, their definition was not equivalent to that of Enochs, except in the projective case, and left open a number of questions regarding the ‘other’ definition. This ‘other’ definition is the subject of the present paper and we attempt to emulate some of Enochs's work for the category of acts over monoids, and concentrate, in the main, on strongly flat acts. We hope to extend this work to other classes of acts, such as injective, torsion free, divisible and free, in a future report.

We prove that for any non-degenerate continuum K ⊆ ℝd there exists a rectifiable curve such that its intersection with K has Hausdorff dimension 1. This answers a question of Kirchheim.

We prove that if f is an integrable function on the unit sphere S in ℝn, g is its symmetric decreasing rearrangement and u, v are the harmonic extensions of f, g in the unit ball , then v has larger convex integral means over each sphere rS, 0 < r < 1, than u has. We also prove that if u is harmonic in with |u| < 1 and u(0) = 0, then the convex integral mean of u on each sphere rS is dominated by that of U, which is the harmonic function with boundary values 1 on the right hemisphere and −1 on the left one.

We provide an alternative constructive proof of the classical Brauer theorem for finite groups based on the well-known description of the complex irreducible representations of the symmetric groups Sn. The theorem is first proved for Sn and then for general G by embedding in Sn and applying the Mackey subgroup theorem.

We associate to every JB*-triple system a so-called universal enveloping ternary ring of operators (TRO). We compute the universal enveloping TROs of the finite dimensional Cartan factors.

Using orbifold metrics of the appropriately signed Ricci curvature on orbifolds with a negative or numerically trivial canonical bundle and the two-dimensional log minimal model programme, we prove that the fundamental group of special compact Kähler 3-folds is almost abelian. This property was conjectured in all dimensions by Campana in 2004, and also for orbifolds in 2007, where the notion of specialness was introduced. We briefly recall the definition, basic properties and the role of special manifolds in classification theory.

Let X be a smooth irreducible projective curve of genus g and gonality 4. We show that the canonical model of X is contained in a uniquely defined surface, ruled by conics, whose geometry is deeply related to that of X. This surface allows us to define four invariants of X and, hence, to stratify the moduli space of four-gonal curves by means of closed irreducible subvarieties, whose dimensions we compute.

Working from a half-plane result of Fletcher and Langley, we show that if f is an integer-valued function on some subset of the natural numbers of positive lower density and is meromorphic of sufficiently small exponential type in the plane, then f is a polynomial.

The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of a positive solution for a quasi-linear elliptic problem involving the (p, q)-Laplacian and a convection term, which means an expression that is not in the principal part and depends on the solution and its gradient. The solution is constructed through an approximating process based on gradient bounds and regularity up to the boundary. The positivity of the solution is shown by applying a new comparison principle, which is established here.

Let L be a nef line bundle on a projective scheme X in positive characteristic. We prove that the augmented base locus of L is equal to the union of the irreducible closed subsets V of X such that L∣V is not big. For a smooth variety in characteristic 0, this was proved by Nakamaye using vanishing theorems.

For stable degree 0 operations, and also for additive unstable operations of bidegree (0, 0), it is known that the centre of the ring of operations for complex cobordism is isomorphic to the corresponding ring of connective complex K-theory operations. Similarly, the centre of the ring of BP operations is the corresponding ring for the Adams summand of p-local connective complex K-theory. Here we show that, in the additive unstable context, this result holds with BP replaced by BP〈n⌰ for any n. Thus, for all chromatic heights, the only central operations are those coming from K-theory.

It was pointed out by Crisan and Ghazali that the error estimate for the cubature on Wiener space algorithm developed by Lyons and Victoir requires an additional assumption on the drift. In this paper we demonstrate that it is straightforward to adopt the analysis of Kusuoka to obtain a general estimate without an additional assumptions on the drift. In the process we slightly sharpen the bounds derived by Kusuoka.

Generalized Chow forms were introduced by Cayley for the case of 3-space; their zero set on the Grassmannian G(1, 3) is either the set Z of lines touching a given space curve (the case of an ‘honest’ Cayley form), or the set of lines tangent to a surface. Cayley gave some equations for F to be a generalized Cayley form, which should hold modulo the ideal generated by F and by the quadratic equation Q for G(1, 3). Our main result is that F is a Cayley form if and only if Z = G(1, 3) ∩ {F = 0} is equal to its dual variety. We also show that the variety of generalized Cayley forms is defined by quadratic equations, since there is a unique representative F0 + QF1 of F, with F0, F1 harmonic, such that the harmonic projection of the Cayley equation is identically 0. We also give new equations for honest Cayley forms, but show, with some calculations, that the variety of honest Cayley forms does not seem to be defined by quadratic and cubic equations.

We show that the complexity of the Lie module Lie(n) in characteristic p is bounded above by m, where pm is the largest p-power dividing n, and, if n is not a p-power, is equal to the maximum of the complexities of Lie(pi) for 1≤i≤m.

We show that minimal rational components on a complete toric manifold X correspond bijectively to some special primitive collections in the fan defining X, and the associated varieties of minimal rational tangents are linear subspaces. Two applications are given: the first is a classification of n-dimensional toric Fano manifolds with a minimal rational component of degree n, and the second shows that any complete toric manifold satisfying certain combinatorial conditions on the fan has the target rigidity property.
