﹛H﹜ere techis wigeis in his buk of chevalrie how batail wiþin listis sal be gouernit it is to wit yat a king or a prince havand powir of baitel or ane depute for ane of yame sall sit iuges in ane scaffald aboue ye entre of ye listis and gyf ye appelour and ye defendur be undur ye regimen and gouernaunce of syndry kinges or princes hauand to yon kynges yare allegiaunce …

f. 266

… not withstanding ye iuges and his just consale sittand in jugement and for ye quhim ay cars sall falle gif ay half and nom al of wapeins left with hors.

According to the incipit this is an extract from the ‘Buk of Chevalrie’ by ‘Wigeis’ (Vegetius); other MS versions entitle this extract ‘The Maner of Battale within listes’ citing De bello campestri, but no such works by Vegetius are known unless De Rei Militari is meant. Ed. (not from this MS) by G. Neilson, Trial by Combat (Glasgow, 1890), pp. 226–32. The text is clearly related to the regulations for trial by battle in the Court of Chivalry, issued in the name of Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester, Constable of England in the reign of Richard II.

Other texts: Neilson cites 3 other MSS: NLS Advocates A.7.25; NLS Advocates A.1.28 (the Monynet MS) ff. 375–78; BL Harley 4700.
