Summary

Jardin de Luxembourg

Around it goes, beneath a tent that shades,

circling there a little while — a band

of painted horses, all from that bright land

that lingers for so long before it fades.

Yes, some pull carriages, but then again,

they each of them show courage in their faces;

a fierce red lion holds one of these places,

while one white elephant comes now and then.

And just as in the woods, a stag is there,

only he wears a saddle, where, perched high,

a small blue girl is buckled in with care.

And riding on the lion, all in white,

a young boy holds tight with his small, hot hand,

since lion tongue and fangs seem poised to bite.

And one white elephant shows now and then,

while on these horses, there come riding by

bright girls soon far too old for things so light.

Mid-spring, they look away; they try to sight

some something — somewhere, here — with wandering eye,

as one white elephant comes now and then.

And on it runs, as if to reach some end,

but only turns and turns, sans raisonné.

A red, a grey, a green, in passing, blend.

A silhouette's not quite formed yet, but may.

And sometimes, over here a smile will wend

its way — elated, dazzling, pleased to spend

itself on all this blind and breathless play.
