In the theory of vector valued functions there is a theorem which states that if a function from a compact interval I into a normed linear space X is of weak bounded variation, then it is of bounded variation. The proof uses in a straightforward way the Uniform Boundedness Principle (see [2, p. 60]). The present paper grew from the question of whether an analogous theorem holds for absolutely continuous functions. The answer is in the negative, and an example will be given (Theorem 7). But it will also be shown that if X is weakly sequentially complete (e.g. an Lp space, 1 ≦ p < ∞ ), then a weakly absolutely continuous point function from / into X is absolutely continuous. The method of proof involves the construction of a countably additive set function in the standard Lebesgue-Stieltjes fashion.

The paper is divided into three parts. In Section 1 extensions of finitely additive, absolutely continuous set functions are carried out in an abstract setting. Section 2 applies this to vector valued (point) functions on the real line.

A square matrix A over a commutative ring R is said to be involutory if A2 = I (identity matrix). It has been recognized for some time that involutory matrices have important applications in algebraic cryptography and the special cases where R is either a finite field or a quotient ring of the rational integers have been extensively researched. However, there has been no detailed attempt to extend the theory to all finite commutative rings. In this paper we illustrate in detail the theory of involutory matrices over finite commutative rings with 1 having odd characteristic. The method is a careful analysis of finite local rings of odd prime power characteristic. The techniques might be also used in the examination of involutory matrices over local rings of characteristic 2λ; however, as illustrated by finite fields of characteristic 2 and Z/2λZ (Z the rational integers), the arguments are basically different. The reader will note the methods are not limited to only questions on involutory matrices.

When the two functions defined by (1.1) and (1.2) are not the same, (1.2) provides the more general situation for a theoretical discussion of the properties of F(z).

Throughout this paper the word “ring” will mean an associative ring which need not have an identity element. There are Artinian rings which are not Noetherian, for example C(p∞) with zero multiplication. These are the only such rings in that an Artinian ring R is Noetherian if and only if R contains no subgroups of type C(p∞) [1, p. 285]. However, a certain class of Artinian rings is Noetherian. A famous theorem of C. Hopkins states that an Artinian ring with an identity element is Noetherian [3, p. 69]. The proofs of these theorems involve the method of “factoring through the nilpotent Jacobson radical of the ring”. In this paper we state necessary and sufficient conditions for an Artinian ring (and an Artinian module) to be Noetherian. Our proof avoids the concept of the Jacobson radical and depends primarily upon the concept of the length of a composition series. As a corollary we obtain the result of Hopkins.

We refer the reader to [1, Chapters 1 and 2] for the notions of E-functor and centrality. Let R1 ⊆ R be the integral group rings of the groups G1⊆ G. Butler and Horrocks [1, Chapter 26] have shown that on the category of left, unitary R-modules the Hochschild E-functor determined by R1 is central. There are no examples of non-central Hochschild E-functors, and our purpose is to establish the existence of a class of such E-functors.

Take G to be finite, non-abelian and let 5 be the centre of R. Denote by φ the Hochschild E-functor determined by S. We obtain a necessary condition for the centrality of φ in terms of the group structure of G. Let G* denote the subgroup of G generated by the commutators of G together with the set ﹛gh(g): g £ G﹜, where h(g) is the class number of g in G.

In this paper, all groups and graphs considered are finite and all graphs are simple (in the sense of Tutte [8, p. 50]). If X is such a graph with vertex set V(X) and automorphism group A(X), we say that X is a graphical regular representation (GRR) of a given abstract group G if

(I) G ≅ A(X) , and

(II) A(X) acts on V(X) as a regular permutation group; that is, given u, v ∈ V(X), there exists a unique φ ∈ A(X) for which φ(u) = v.

That for any abstract group G there exists a graph X satisfying (I) is well-known (cf. [3]).

A ring A has finite norm properly, abbreviated FNP, if each proper homomorphic image of A is finite. In [3], Chew and Lawn described some of the structural properties of FNP rings with identity, which they called residually finite rings. The twofold aim of this paper is to extend the results of [3] to arbitrary rings with FNP and to give characterizations of FNP rings independent of the results of [3].

If A is a ring, let A+ denote A regarded as an abelian group. In the first section of this paper, we explore the effects of FNP upon the structure of A+. The following theorem is typical of the results in this section.

All topological spaces shall be uniformizable (completely regular Hausdorff). A uniformity on X shall be viewed as a collection μ of coverings of X, via the manner of Tukey [20] and Isbell [16], and the associated uniform space denoted μX. Given the uniformizable topological space X, we shall be concerned with compatible uniformities as follows (discussed more carefully in § 1). The fine uniformity α (finest compatible with the topology); the “cardinal reflections“ αm of α (m an infinite cardinal number) ; αc, the weak uniformity generated by the real-valued continuous functions.

With μ standing, generically, for one of these uniformities, we consider the question: when is μ(X × Y) = μX × μY For μ = αℵ0 (the finest compatible precompact uniformity), the problem is equivalent to that of when

β(X × Y) = βX × βY,

β denoting Stone-Cech compactification; this is answered by the theorem of Glicksberg [9]. For μ = α, we have Isbell's generalization [16, VI1.32].

The present paper is a sequel to the previous paper bearing the same title by the same authors [3] and which will be hereafter designated by the bold-face Roman numeral I. Further results are obtained in determining whether a given finite non-abelian group G has a graphical regular representation. In particular, an affirmative answer will be given if (|G|, 6) = 1.

Inasmuch as much of the machinery of I will be required in the proofs to be presented and a perusal of I is strongly recommended to set the stage and provide motivation for this paper, an independent and redundant introduction will be omitted in the interest of economy.

Cet article reprend, dans un langage moderne, les idées de deux publications assez anciennes, dues à Polya [3] et Ostrowsky [4], en 1919. Les auteurs montraient que si A est principal, As est un A-module libre qui admet sur A une base formée de polynômes de degré croissant ; si A est plus généralement l'anneau des entiers d'un corps de nombres ils mettaient en évidence une suite d'idéaux fractionnaires de A. En exposant le cas de l'anneau A principal, pour un anneau de valisation discrète dans le premier paragraphe, puis en généralisant aux anneaux de Dedekind dans notre second paragraphe, nous pouvons énoncer de façon plus explicite, que As est un A-module projectif, que l'on peut décomposer canoniquement en somme d'idéaux fractionnaires de A.

The concept of injectivity in classes of algebras can be traced back to Baer's initial results for Abelian groups and modules in [1]. The first results in non-module types of algebras appeared when Halmos [14] described the injective Boolean algebras using Sikorski's lemma on extensions of Boolean homomorphisms [19]. In recent years, there have been several results (see references) describing the injective algebras in other particular equational classes of algebras.

In [10], Eckmann and Schopf introduced the fundamental notion of essential extension and gave the basic relations that this concept had with injectivity in the equational class of all modules over a given ring. They developed the notion of an injective hull (or envelope) which provided every module with a minimal injective extension or equivalently, a maximal essential extension. In [6] and [9], it was noted that these relationships hold in any equational class with enough injectives.

In [15; 16; 17], Horst Leptin introduced what he called generalized group algebras. These Banach *-algebras are formed by letting a locally compact group G act on a Banach *-algebra A both by *-automorphisms and by a cocycle with values in the multiplier algebra, M (A ), of A. We will review the precise construction later, but for now we remark that examples include the group algebra of a group extension, the covariance algebras of quantum field theory, the “projective group algebras” of a group G (that is, for each complex-valued cocycle λ, called a multiplier in the literature, the Banach *-algebra whose nondegenerate *-representations are in bijective correspondence with the λ-projective representations of G), and the twisted group algebras of Edwards and Lewis [8; 9].

Throughout this paper, let p be a prime, P be a p-group of order pt , and ϕ be an isomorphism of a subgroup R of P of index p onto a subgroup Q which fixes no non-identity subgroup of P, setwise. In [2, Lemma 2.2], Glauberman shows that P can be embedded in a finite group G such that ϕ is effected by conjugation by some element g of G. We assume that P is thus embedded. Then Q = P ∩ Pg. Let H = 〈P,Pg〉 and V = [H,Z(Q)], so Q ⊲ H and V ⊲ H.

Let E(p) be the non-abelian group of order p3 which is generated by two elements of order p. Then E(p) is dihedral if p = 2 and has exponent p if p is odd. If p is odd, then E* (p) is defined in § 2 to be a particular group of order p6 and nilpotence class three.

This paper develops some techniques for the study of derivation algebras and cohomology groups of Lie algebras. We are especially concerned with solvable algebras over arbitrary fields with structural properties like those of the Borel subalgebras of complex semi-simple Lie algebras. In particular, these algebras are semi-direct sums of nilpotent ideals and abelian subalgebras which act on the ideals in a semi-simple fashion. We make strong use, in our discussion, of a cohomology theorem of Hochschild-Serre. This result is stated herein (§ 2) in a modified form which allows us to omit the original hypothesis that the base field have characteristic 0.

The purpose of this paper is to characterize the radical ideals of principal ideal domains and Dedekind domains. We show that if T is a radical class and R is a PID, then T(R) is an intersection of prime ideals of R. More specifically, if

then T(R) = (p1p2 … pk), where p1, p2, … , pk are distinct primes, and where (p1p2 … Pk) denotes the principal ideal of R generated by p1p2 … pk. We also characterize the radical ideals of commutative principal ideal rings. For radical ideals of Dedekind domains we obtain a characterization similar to the one given for PID's.

Let G be a group and ZG be the integral group ring of G. We shall write 𝔤 for the augmentation ideal of G; that is to say, the kernel of the homomorphism of ZG onto Z which sends each group element to 1. The powers gλ of 𝔤 are defined inductively for ordinals λ by 𝔤λ = 𝔤μ𝔤, if λ = μ + 1, and otherwise. The first ordinal λ for which gλ = 𝔤λ+1 is called the augmentation terminal or simply the terminal of G. For example, if G is either a cyclic group of prime order or else isomorphic with the additive group of rational numbers then gn > 𝔤ω = 0 for all finite n, so that these groups have terminal ω.

The groups with finite terminal are well-known and easily described. If G is one such, then every homomorphic image of G must also have finite terminal.

A Stone lattice is a distributive, pseudo-complemented lattice L such that a* V a** = 1, for all a in L; or equivalently, a bounded distributive lattice L in which, for all a in L, the annihilator a⊥ = {b ∊ L|a ∧ b = 0} is a principal ideal generated by an element of the centre of L, namely a*.

Thus it is natural to define an 𝔪-Stone lattice to be a bounded distributive lattice L in which, for each subset A of cardinality less than or equal to m, the annihilator A⊥ = {b ∊ L|a ∧ b = 0, for all a ∊ A} is a principal ideal generated by an element of the centre of L.

In this paper we characterize 𝔪-Stone lattices, and show, by considering the lattice of global sections of an appropriate sheaf, that any bounded distributive lattice can be embedded in an 𝔪-Stone lattice, the embedding being a left adjoint to the forgetful functor.

The purpose of this paper is to exploit an analogy between algebraic extensions of fields and essential extensions of modules, in which the role of the algebraic closure of a field F is played by the injective hull H(M) of a unitary left R-module M. (The notion of * ‘algebraic’ extensions of general algebraic systems has been studied by Shoda; see, for example [5].)

In this analogy, the role of a polynomial p(x) is played by a homomorphism of R-modules

which will be called an ideal homomorphism into M. The process of solving the equation p(x) = 0 in F, or in an algebraic extension of F, will be replaced by the process of extending an ideal homomorphism (1) to a homomorphism F* from R into M, or into an essential extension of M.
