These be the namys of the noblemen and others of skottlond that wer taken prysoners besydes the water of eske by carleyl in the west marches of englond which was done the xxiiij day of nouembr in the xxxiiij yere of the reigne of kyng henry the eyght which wer takyn by the wardyn of the the said marches callid sir thomas wharton and dyvers other gentylmen and of the kynges subgettes as shall follow after the skottes names anno domini 1542.

Followed by a list of c. twenty-nine names which begins ‘Fyrst the erle of castylles the erle of glencarne and lorde of gylmawres the lorde maxwell warden of the west marches of skottlond and admyrall of skottlond …’ The list ends with the statement: ‘The nombre of all the presoners be aboute a ml wherof ij c or more be gentylmen xx slayne and some drownyd and nott x englysch men slayne thanks be gevyn to god.’

These be the namys of the gentylmen of england that wer at this journey and takyng of thise skotts presoners afore wrytten.

Heading to a list of twenty-three names, beginning with ‘Syr Thomas Wharton knyght and warden of þe west marches and capteyn of carleyll’ and ending with ‘Allexander Appylby’. Followed by the text: ‘The englyshmen wer under twoo thowsand and but sex stondertes and the skottes wer aboue xxx stondertes by the reporte of the lorde maxwell to sir thomas wharton and estemyd to be a xviii ml men these wer the names of the englysh captyns þat had these sex stondertes syr thomas wharton my lorde parres stondert which was borne before sir walter stryklond his deputy wiþ ij c archers of kendall and sir wyllym musgraves stondert sir thomas curueyn sir johan lowther wyllm penyngtons’.
