Summary

His slimness held a bow now nearly taut —

a bow no woman could have broken. Now,

sometimes, there crossed his face, a hint — a thought

no longer disinclined to haunt his brow —

of one, say, passing by; or of some other

locked in a portrait that was strange and old.

He smiled. He was no longer just another

weeper in darkness, sobbing unconsoled.

And while a wholly new self-confidence

would sometimes comfort, spoiling as it praised

him, still he gravely bore each woman's glance

that struck and moved him, leaving him amazed.

Don Juans Auswahl

Und der Engel trat ihn an: Bereite

dich mir ganz. Und da ist mein Gebot.

Denn daß einer jene überschreite,

die die Süßesten an ihrer Seite

bitter machen, tut mir not.

Zwar auch du kannst wenig besser lieben,

(unterbrich mich nicht: du irrst),

doch du glühest, und es steht geschrieben,

daß du viele führen wirst

zu der Einsamkeit, die diesen

tiefen Eingang hat. Laß ein

die, die ich dir zugewiesen,

daß sie wachsend Heloisen

überstehn und überschrein.
