Summary

And at the end he was not able to

refuse her: she would sing in joyous tones

that celebrated her devoted love

for Him. Below the cross, in vestments of

her pain, she sank; grief was a robe shot through

entirely with love's most precious stones.

But when she reached the grave though, to anoint

Him, down her face the tears began to flow,

for He was risen (and on her account!)

so He might bless her with His veto: “No.”

All hollowed out, she failed to see, until

at last, now strengthened by His dying, He

forbade the consolation of that oil —

her roiling sorrow and anxiety —

so He might form from her a loving soul

who'd stop enticing lovers to her bed.

For though love's violent storms once rapt her whole

existence, she's exceeded all He's said.

Magnifikat

an Trost zu glauben, Hoffnung oder Rat;

doch da die hohe tragende Matrone

ihr ernst und stolz entgegentrat

und alles wußte ohne ihr Vertrauen,

da war sie plötzlich an ihr ausgeruht;

fast ohne hinzusehen ihren Schimmer;
