Summary

Naples

Think of a fleeing man so hot he glows,

the victors close behind. This man who burns

in flight, without a warning, turns

and charges into hundreds suddenly.

With just such wild ferocity,

the glow from fruit again, again, re-throws

itself into the blue Tyrrhenian sea.

Meanwhile, the orange-boat chugs on ahead,

shuttling that fruit to where the freighter, grey

and huge, accepts what other boats convey,

from thrust to thrust (they load both fish and bread).

The scornful ship fills up its cargo bay

with coal. Its womb stands gaping like the dead.

Landschaft

Wie zuletzt, in einem Augenblick

aufgehäuft aus Hängen, Häusern, Stücken

alter Himmel und zerbrochnen Brücken,

und von drüben her, wie vom Geschick,

von dem Sonnenuntergang getroffen,

angeschuldigt, aufgerissen, offen —

durchsichtige Wolken wogen

über blassen Häuserreihn

die schon Dunkel in sich eingesogen;

aber plötzlich ist vom Mond ein Schein

durchgeglitten, licht, als hätte ein

Erzengel irgendwo sein Schwert gezogen.
