Summary
There was a time when I was like spring wheat.
But with your rage, You found that You could start
a fire in the heart I offered — heat
that boils it like a seething lion's heart.
Oh, what a mouth that rage expected then,
when I was almost still a boy. It bloomed
a wound that bleeds, again and yet again,
first one cursed year, and then … a year that's doomed.
Each day, I struck the note of new affliction
You'd planned relentlessly; You could not kill
my mouth, Insatiate One. Now, my prediction:
think hard how You will make that mouth be still
when those we've crushed and scattered in their woe
are so far gone they never will be found;
when they are lost and cannot be exhumed.
That day, in rubble heaped up on the ground,
I'll want to hear; I'll want my voice back, so
that what was once a wail may be resumed.
Eine Sibylle
Einst, vor Zeiten, nannte man sie alt.
Doch sie blieb und kam dieselbe Straße
täglich. Und man änderte die Maße,
und man zählte sie wie einen Wald
nach Jahrhunderten. Sie aber stand
jeden Abend auf derselben Stelle,
schwarz wie eine alte Citadelle
hoch und hohl und ausgebrannt;
von den Worten, die sich unbewacht
wider ihren Willen in ihr mehrten,
immerfort umschrieen und umflogen,
während die schon wieder heimgekehrten
dunkel unter ihren Augenbogen
saßen, fertig für die Nacht.
