Summary

Venice

In this interior it scooped and coiled

(space turning in the golden tiles, all curved,

round-cornered, smooth, and with perfection, oiled),

the darkness of this State — held up, preserved —

was piled in secret as a countermass

to light, which had, in all its things, so grown

that they had nearly died away, unknown.

Then suddenly, you wonder: don't they pass

Away? You push it back, the gallery —

that miner's catwalk near the dome's bright gleam —

and recognize the light, still whole and sound

and splendid to the sight. But though you see,

you wistfully compare the tedium found

there with that long-enduring chariot team.

Ein Doge

Fremde Gesandte sahen, wie sie geizten

mit ihm und allem was er tat;

Was die Signorie

in seinem Innern zu bezwingen glaubte,

bezwang er selbst. In seinem greisen Haupte

war es besiegt. Sein Antlitz zeigte wie.
