Summary

We cannot know his head, a thing undreamt-

of, with its eyes like ripening apples, though

his lamp-like torso burns still with a glow —

a lamp in which his gaze, although now trimmed,

still shines. The prow that is his breast could not

so dazzle, otherwise; no smile could run

down through the loins that have been gently spun,

on to that center where life is begot.

This stone would stand like something maimed and lopped-

off under shoulders lucent as they dropped.

It would not glimmer like a panther skin,

or from what holds it in, burst like a star.

For there's no place from which you can't be seen.

Begin now: you must change the life you are.

Kretische Artemis

Wind der Vorgebirge: war nicht ihre

Stirne wie ein lichter Gegenstand?

Glatter Gegenwind der leichten Tiere,

formtest du sie: ihr Gewand

bildend an die unbewußten Brüste

wie ein wechselvolles Vorgefühl?

Während sie, als ob sie alles wüßte,

auf das Fernste zu, geschürzt und kühl,

stürmte mit den Nymphen und den Hunden,

ihren Bogen probend, eingebunden

in den harten hohen Gurt;

manchmal nur aus fremden Siedelungen

angerufen und erzürnt bezwungen

von dem Schreien um Geburt.
