Summary

The shield is like a mirror drawing what's

far and away, absorbing silently,

open an instant, and then closed. It shuts

upon that mirror's imagery:

of beings living on this long line's site

(dwelling where now are none they must appease);

of all its things; of its realities

(from right to left and left to right),

which it admits to, blazoning in display.

Above, a visored helmet with laid-in

renown rests like a knight's remains.

(A jewelled crest tops it in a wingéd spray.)

The mantle, as if grieving what has been,

flutters, then plunges richly like the rains.

an sein Geschlecht, das nun mit ihm zerschmolz;

machten sich schläfernd in den Möbeln breit;

als sei der Brief an ihn: Wie du mich kennst;

und klopfte lustig auf die Seitenlehnen.

Der Spiegel aber, innen unbegrenzter,

ließ leise einen Vorhang aus, ein Fenster —:

denn dorten stand, fast fertig, das Gespenst.
